Of the two selections, Pierre Fournier's masterful performance of Dvorak's Cello Concerto in B minor is the most musically significant, and by itself the only reason to take this disc seriously. Backed handsomely by George Szell and the Berlin Philharmonic in fine fettle, Fournier delivers the concerto with rich tone, impassioned lyricism, and striking clarity, all the while making his astonishing execution seem almost effortless. Deutsche Grammophon's original recording is splendid, with warmth, realistic depth, full-frequency sound, and natural placement of the cello. Following this satisfying performance, however, the eight Slavonic Dances are less compelling and seem like a long stretch of filler.
