Pan Night & Day starts out with a piece by Lord Kitchener and keeps moving from there. Our Boys Steel Orchestra has always been uncompromising in their adherence to calypso, so don't take the title song to be an adaptation of the Cole Porter standard. The album moves through song after song of pure calypso for a mid-sized steel band (there are only 20 or 30 musicians playing at a time here, not the full 100 of a Panorama band). To top even the Kitchener contribution, Len "Boogsie" Sharp, one of the big five steel band composers of the '80s (along with Ray Holman, among others), arranged most of the songs on the album for the band. "Me En' Fightin" is something of a calypso standard, and "The Hammer" and "Bahia Girl" are original compositions by David Rudder for the album. All in all, it's quite a good album. Though true fans might enjoy the later Our Boys album Pan Progress a bit more, both are exceptional works. ~ Adam Greenberg, Rovi
