300's Zack Snyder brings Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' critically acclaimed comic book Watchmen to the big screen, courtesy of DC Comics and Warner Bros. Pictures. Set in an alternate universe circa 1985, the film's world is a highly unstable one where a nuclear war is imminent between America and Russia. Superheroes have long been made to hang up their tights thanks to the government-sponsored Keene Act, but that all changes with the death of The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), a robust ex-hero commando whose mysterious free fall out a window perks the interest of one of the country's last remaining vigilantes, Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley). His investigation leads him to caution many of his other former costumed colleagues, including Dr. Manhattan, Night Owl (Patrick Wilson), Ozymandias (Matthew Goode), Sally Jupiter (Carla Gugino), and her daughter, The Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman). Heralded for bringing the world of superheroes into the literary world, Watchmen gave the super-powered mythos a real-life grounding that had been missing in mainstream comics to that point. The film adaptation had languished in one form of development hell or another for years after the book's release, with various directors on and off the project, including Terry Gilliam, David Hayter, and Darren Aronofsky, as well as Paul Greengrass, whose eventual dismissal stemmed from budget conflicts with the studio. TITLE: Watchmen
GENRE: SciFi, comic based, alternate time line of the present day
CAST: Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Carla Gugino, Jackie Earl Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan,Patrick Wilson, Matt Frewer and Stephen McHattie
PLOT: In a parallel universe, the USA wins in Vietnam and this leads to hightened tensions between the USA and USSR. How we won in Vietnam is by a rebirth of a concept of vigilante squads only this time there is a hero with real superpowers involved. Parallel issues of member killings, identity searches, self awareness and humanitarian efforts all converge to eventually save the world.
RETURN ON INVESTMENT: 9.2 of 10; Just the manner of the telling of this tale is worth the experience. It has flashbacks, narrations, dialogue and visuals to weave the story line into a cohesive whole. The acting is well presented. The sets and costumes are a great help in making us believe we are in that world and not ours. The stunts are mostly pugilistic in nature but effective. The Computer Graphics are state of the art. The Character played by Crudup, Doctor Manhattan (named after the project) is mostly a generated image but appears to be real most of the time. Fantastic.
DVD BONUS: My copy is 162 mins long. There is an ultimate directors cut which ups the time to 215 mins but sadly, nothing else to offer here. Perhaps in another twenty years they'll do an anniversary edition and we'll see some "Making of..." stuff
ADDED NOTES: I really want to get the ultimate version so I can see the artistic vision extended almost another complete hour. As is asked in the film, "Who's to watch the Watchmen?" Me, Gosh, POW, WHAM indeed!

if you like the genre...
If you love comic books and outlandish superhero adventures and don't mind mediocre acting, then this is the movie for you. While I watched it I kept thinking, Wow, middle school boys would love this! But not me. The movie was cliched, poorly acted, and over the top with trying to take itself seriously. I laughed out loud at what was supposed to be the big dramatic love scene. It just doesn't work.
