Weirdly amazing
If you've seen other Guy Maddin movies, then you pretty much know what you're in for...but if you don't, be prepared!
It's a bit of an understatement to say that this movie is "kooky". It's very darkly comic, tragic, even ridiculous at times, but marvelously so. Isabella Rossellini is amazing--as always--and Mark McKinney is a perfect character. He's totally unlikeable at first, and by the end, sympathy for him is elicited through Maddin's magic. The movie pokes good fun at the pretentiousness of art while somehow avoiding a didactic tone. This is a movie to own and watch over and over!
