Following up his critically acclaimed Monster's Ball, director Marc Forster took on this biography of playwright James Matthew Barrie, the scribe who penned the children's classic Peter Pan. Johnny Depp stars as the turn-of-the-century writer as the film follows Barrie as he struggles to write and have his play produced while he cares for his down-on-their-luck neighbors who inspired the story in the first place. This is the somewhat true story of the creator of Peter Pan, and features a fantastic performance by both Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet. In addition, youngster Freddie Highmore gives a great performance that will get even the most solemn viewer a bit choked up.It's a story about loss, and love and the power of imagination - and yes, that all sounds quite cheesy, but it isn't.
If it is not perfect, it's because the film is sometimes a bit precious, and also not for those who like their films without a bit of fantasy. It's a serious, but lovely film.
