At first, the anime series Noein: To Your Other Self revolves around a fairly standard unexpected-young-hero plot. The stage is set when 12-year-old Haruka and her friend Yuu are approached by strangers from the future who tell Haruka that she is the key to saving the universe from annihilation at the hands of a Nihilistic group called Shangri-La. This, however, is where the conventions end, as the woman who approaches Haruka is actually Haruka herself, 15 years in the future. Noein's plot revolves around many theories of quantum physics, and explores what they would mean if their consequences could be seen in everyday life. In the story, each possible outcome of a given situation sprouts a new time-space in which that particular outcome took place, leading to infinite branches of new universes. This concept is known as Everett's Many Worlds Interpretation, and it is integral to the plot, as is the Copenhagen Interpretation, which suggests that the probability of an event occurring is directly affected by the observer of that event. In the series, Haruka has "observer status," and can affect the outcomes of events in the multiverse, simply by looking at them. Haruka even explains some of this idea to her bodyguard Kooriyama with a popular thought-experiment in quantum physics called Schrödinger's Cat. Despite all the theory, however, Noein: To Your Other Self is a series about people, the nature of life, and the spiritual and psychological ramifications of living in a complex world.
