The saga begins when Emery awakens in the hospital from a near-fatal and paranormal experience with Longinus and Cain. While he was out, Cain made a new best friend with Lucifer, and while continuing to roam the Earth because of his curse of immortality, he discovered his updated purpose ââ?¬" to be the antichrist. Meanwhile, the reader is introduced to Rhyme in real life, out of Emeryââ?¬â?¢s memories- she continues to be his obsession and his ex-wife, yet the reader will learn more that may influence any original thoughts of her. Igneus is around doing his thing, attempting to distance himself as much as possible from Cain and his plans. ââ?¬Å"A Measure of Rhymeââ?¬Â? shows good continuing to trump evil, but the devil is in the details.
ââ?¬Å"A Measure of Rhymeââ?¬Â? contains subtle hints to biblically referenced stories and material, beginning with Cain making his reappearance, or seeming ââ?¬Å"resurrection,ââ?¬Â? while parting a crowd and riding a horse; a staff is also evident, along with powers imbibed by the holder. Cainââ?¬â?¢s appearance and abilities have changed since his deal with the devil, but his sly and conniving attitude seen from the beginning has not changed ; as the definition of malice is the intention or the desire to do evil, it is evident that Cain lives up to the title.
The second installment continues the readerââ?¬â?¢s edge-of-your-seat experience, yet in a slightly different way than ââ?¬Å"A Portion of Malice.ââ?¬Â? ââ?¬Å"A Measure of Rhymeââ?¬Â? contains action throughout the story, but not as in-depth or violent as in the first book, with the language of the characters presenting to be more PG-13, rather than R, as found in the first story. This reader couldnââ?¬â?¢t put the book down and finished it in record time. Solid characters and storyline, along with the appropriate amount of intensity, make for the perfect formula in a nearly perfect series.
