The Clason Map Company was the first to publish a road atlas of the United States and Canada, but did not survive the Great Depression. Clason is best known for writing a series of informational pamphlets about being thrifty and how to achieve financial success. He started writing the pamphlets in 1926, using parables that were set in ancient Babylon. Banks and insurance companies began to distribute the parables, and the most famous ones were compiled into the book The Richest Man in Babylon - The Success Secrets of the Ancients. He is credited with coining the phrase, "Pay yourself first". (wikipedia.org)

Written for the roaring twenties, it became a type of bible for traveling salesmen during the great depression. Never out of print. A companion volume might be the Dale Carnegie HTWFAIP, but more likely paired with Hill's "Think and Grow Rich". But you will learn how to fatten your wallet, pinch a penny, begin a life-long style of living that has a high chance of almost doubling the value of your income and leaving you a woodpile for old age or an inheritance in your last will. Still in the original hokey King James English. Trusting money experts, finding money experts to trust. It is the first book you need after you get serious about life. Light, quick, cheap...you will give it away.

This book is a classic. My son's college finance teacher said that "The Richest Man in Babylon" would be the class textbook, not the required supplemental reading, if the school had not provided a text. The book contains the principles for financial success that I was taught as a child, and that have helped my family manage very well on a public schoolteacher's income -- inasfar as I have remembered them. I'm so glad for a refresher and will rededicate our family finances to this timeless wisdom, beginning today!
