WINGED WARFARE is the thrilling memoir of the Royal Flying Corps' top-scoring fighter pilot of the First World War, William 'Billy' Bishop, VC. Written at the end of 1917 and published whilst the war was still raging in early 1918, Billy was the RFC's answer to Germany's 'Red Baron', Manfred von Richthofen. William Bishop initially enlisted in the Canadian Mounted Rifles in 1914 but transferred to the RFC in 1915. His first of 72 combat victories was scored from his Nieuport 17 on 25 March 1917, though half his total would come from the cockpit of the famous S.E.5 fighter. Bishop's tactics were aggressive, his air gunnery skills exceptional and lone-wolf patrols innovative. However, despite being the third highest-scoring ace of the entire war and living to tell the tale, he is far less well-known outside his native Canada than other celebrated Royal Flying Corps aces such as Albert Ball, Mick Mannock and James McCudden. This new 2020 edition of this classic firsthand account, has been sympathetically enhanced by the addition of over thirty of Bishop's 'Combats in the Air' reports, the reinstatement of dates, names and other service details expunged by the wartime censor. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: William Avery Bishop was born in 1894 in Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada. He followed his older brother, Worth, into the Royal Military Academy in Kingston, Ontario but in 1914 just before he was due to return for his final year he left to join up. After short stints in a Canadian cavalry regiment, he used his charm and family connections to get into the RFC as an observer then again to get trained as a pilot. He began his rise to fame in 1917 as he became the Royal Flying Corps' 'Top Gun' after the reigning ace, Albert Ball, was killed in action and for his daring dawn raid on a German aerodrome earned him the Victoria Cross. Two combat tours as a fighter pilot over the Western Front with 60 and 85 Squadron was sufficient for him to amass 72 kills, making him the third top-scoring pilot of the war behind Manfred von Richthofen (80) and France's Ren Fonck (75). His other books include THE FLYING SQUAD (with Rothesay Stuart-Wortley) and WINGED PEACE: THE STORY OF THE AIR AGE. He died in 1956. PRAISE FOR 'WINGED WARFARE': 'A wonderful book... his descriptions are nearly as thrilling as the combats themselves' THE SPECTATOR; 'One of our nation's heroes... an odyssey of the flying service' THE GLOBE & MAIL; 'The greatest English scouting ace' ERNST UDET; 'A surpassingly good book' THE DAILY MAIL; 'One of the classics of aviation literature' KIRKUS REVIEWS'Extraordinarily interesting... a classic' AERONAUTICS
