Migration provides a sort of natural experiment which permits comparisons of disease risk in populations of similar genetic background living in different environments. Many countries worldwide have large communities of Italian origin as a result of the emigration of some 26 million people from Italy over the last 100 years. This volume reports data from each of nine host countries for which cancer incidence or mortality data are available by country of birth, and compares them with the local-born in those countries and with the population that remained in Italy. Where possible, the data are also analyzed by duration of stay in the host country and/or age at arrival, and comments are made on possible environmental causes for the changes observed.
