The development and explosive growth of landscape painting in the Northern Netherlands since the end of the sixteenth century must be counted among the most prominent contributions to the history of European art. Leiden artists such as Jan van Goyen, Jan Porcellis, Pieter de Neyn also played a role in this process. Together with Haarlem and Amsterdam, Leiden was one of the cradles of the typically Dutch, atmospheric monochrome landscape.
