While the concept of the "passive house" dates back to the 1970s, it was not until the creation of Passivhaus (the German standard of energy optimization for housing construction) that this practice of sustainable architecture developed. Ever since the first Passivhaus building was built in Germany in the early 1990s, the Passivhaus protocol has been applied successfully to buildings around the world, from chilly Oslo to the tropical Shanghai. With a practical and direct approach, the author presents the basic concepts of the Passivhaus framework, the technologies it employs, and the fundamental guidelines for its application in countries with temperate and warm climates.
