Genau diese Situation an deutschen Hochschulen greift Ulrich Horstmann mit seiner Kritik am Hegemonialstatus amerikanischer Theorieproduktion auf, die keine Grundsatzdiskussionen mehr m�glich macht, kritikimmun einen eigenen Jargon wie eine Fremdsprache pflegt und nur noch in Theoriezirkeln unterwegs ist. Die Experten �f�r hochtourenden Leerlauf und geistt�tende Sterilit�t�, die die Macht ergriffen haben und die zugleich von Kunst und Literatur nichts mehr wissen wollen, sondern die theoretischen Werke zum Ma� aller Dinge erhoben haben, diese �ausgewiesenen Experten� entlarvt der Autor mit viel Witz und erinnert an die Grundtugenden der Skepsis und des Staunens. Die 'F�hrerpers�nlichkeiten' der Theorie (Derrida, Bloom, de Man, Greenblatt etc.) werden vorgef�hrt und in der Analyse dieser �totalit�ren Diskurse� gezeigt, was das bekannte mulmige Gef�hl bei der Lekt�re vieler theoretischer Texte ausl�st. Interessante Gegenbeispiele pr�sentiert Horstmann in seinen Fallstudien jener englischsprachigen Wissenschaftler und Autoren, die auf unterschiedliche Weise versucht haben, Literatur und Theorie zu verbinden: David Lodge, Terry Eagleton, Malcolm Bradbury. Einzig George Steiner mit seiner �Ein-Mann-Kampagne wider den theoretischen Absolutismus� findet Gnade, denn dessen Konzepte stellen eine sinnvolle Alternative zu den herrschenden Theoriedebatten dar. Horstmann nimmt in dieser originellen Streitschrift �ber das Trauerspiel Theoriedebatte kein Blatt vor den Mund und sieht sich hier in der Tradition der �Gentle Art of Making Enemies�.
