Sie wollen einen Beitrag dazu leisten, Jesu Tod fur die heutige Zeit verstandlich auszulegen und ausserdem auszuloten, wie sich dies in Predigt und Unterricht vermitteln lasst.Jesus ist nach dem Neuen Testament "fur uns" gestorben. Die Frage ist, was "fur uns" dabei bedeutet. Traditionell hat die Theologie dies im Sinne von "an unserer Stelle" verstanden: "zur Kompensation fur unsere Sunde", so die mittelalterliche Satisfaktionstheorie des Anselm von Canterbury. Die Reformation griff diese Deutung teils auf, teils wurden neue Aspekte betont. Im 20. Jahrhundert spielte die Diskussion um das Verstandnis des "Opfers" eine wichtige Rolle, und ein neues Verstandnis von Opfer, Stellvertretung, Lebenshingabe trat in den Vordergrund. Ob es angemessen ist, die Kreuzigung Jesu im Sinne eines "Suhnopfers" zu verstehen, das als Voraussetzung der Vergebung der Sunden anzusehen ware, wird heute heftig diskutiert.Die Sprache der Bibel verbindet sich mit Bildern und Metaphern, die es auszulegen gilt. So unterscheidet sich etwa das Opferverstandnis aus griechisch-romischer Sicht fundamental von dem des Alten Testaments und des Judentums. Nach griechisch-romischem Verstandnis sollten die Gotter durch ein Opfer freundlich gestimmt werden. Aus Sicht des Alten Testaments und des Judentums ist Gott vielmehr der Stifter eines Rituals, an dessen Ende Sundenvergebung steht.International fuhrende Vertreter verschiedener theologischer Disziplinen, die den jeweiligen Stand der Forschung aufgrund eigener Studien mitbestimmt haben, geben Einblick in ihre Erkenntnisse aus religionsgeschichtlicher, exegetischer, systematisch- und praktisch-theologischer Sicht und stellen sich in diesem Band der Diskussion.
