As new but for a hint of age yellowing to page margins. Color-illus. boards; black letters on yellow title block. 172 pp. with color/bw images throughout. Text in French. Painted for the refectory of the convent of Santa Maria dei Servi of Venice in 1570-1573, Le Repas chez Simon was offered to Louis XIV in 1644 by La Serenissima (Venice) in token of friendship between the two States. It was moved to the Musée du Louvre in 1832, and Le Repas chez Simon did not return to Versailles until 1961...Despite a major restoration in 1948 and two superficial cleanings thereafter, the painting still was obscured, in particular, by thick varnishes. A final restoration was required which began in 1994 and ended in 1997. This catalogue is about that last restoration of Veronese's magnificent work. A beautiful presentation!
