A pioneer of abstract art starting in 1915, Alberto Magnelli created the whirlwind of color that was the series Explosions Lyriques amid postwar exuberance. Immediately thereafter, he began to formulate a new approach to painting that, while it might seem more classic in terms of its subjects or landscapes, was nevertheless - as Magnelli defined it himself - a peinture invent�e. Over the course of the decade, the last he would live in Italy before fleeing the rise of fascism, he would strive to invent a style of resolutely modern painting that would nevertheless incorporate the force and sobriety of the works of Renaissance artists from Giotto to Piero della Francesca. These efforts would lead to his becoming a rigorous creator of geometric abstraction.
