The book consists of b&w photos of dioramas of the life of Satan; playing cards, enjoying a concert, sitting in judgement, torture scenes in Hell etc. Satirical and a lot of fun-an odd curiosa. "Les Diableries is the title of a series of stereoscopic photographs published in Paris during the 1860s. The photographs, commonly known as stereoviews, portray sculpted clay vignettes which depict scenes of daily life in Hell. Much of the subject matter was satirical and mirrored the corruption and excess of Paris during the Second Empire. Napoleon III s authoritarian rule was repeatedly the subject of criticism, as was the decadent lifestyle of the bourgeoisie. At least three sculptors are known to have created vignettes for the series: Louis Alfred Habert, Pierre Adolph Hennetier, and Louis Edmond Cougny. The series was originally published by Francois Benjamin Lamiche but was later taken over and expanded by the publisher Adolph Block. A total of 72 scenes were published by Block. Many similar stereoviews, though of lesser quality, were subsequently published by a competitor of Adolph Block s named Jules Marinier." (from wikipedia) Pages: 200 Place: Poitiers Year: 1978 Publisher: Balland Size: 21 x 28 cm (approx. ) Condition notes: I worked for the American distributor of this book and picked it up as an item of curiosity, and it has been in a glass shelf rarely perused, and when done so, very gently for 20 some years. It's a hardcover with laminated boards (similar to old textbooks) so there is some wear to cover but extremely minimal-once more item is as it was when I procured it. This is typical wear a laminated cover gets when shipped from publisher.
