I bought this book because Permuted Press is the publishing company, and - in my opinion - they have the BEST selection of zombie novels I have ever read. Some of their other titles include: Dying to Live: A Novel of Life Among the Undead, After Twilight: Walking with the Dead, and Down the Road: A Zombie Horror Story (Special Edition). Permuted Press has established quite the reputation for excellent authors of the zombie genre.
Now, Tony Monchinski tells us in the preface that this story was actually authored by a guy named Tommy Arlin, who is living the nomadic lifestyle all over the world. He was turned down several times until Permuted Press picked up the novel. The preface itself was an interesting tale about Tommy, Tony, and their love of zombies. Basically, Tony got this book published as a favor to Tommy.
The novel itself is very hard to put into words...the first few chapters left me feeling like my mind had been violated, but in a way that a zombie fan (such as myself) would appreciate. The characters are very complex - Buddy being the perfect example. If you read through this novel too fast, you might think that Buddy is an upstanding guy, unless you were paying attention to the tiny detail that connects him to some very depraved behavior.
The main theme of the novel (that I got out of it, anyway) is that if you think zombies are the characters' biggest problem, you are sadly mistaken. Leave it to an apocalyptic crisis to show you how evil some people can really be. It may seem like some characters rise above the occasion, but even those ones question "playing by the rules." Harris illustrates this perfectly; he does is best to help those around him, just to find out someone has set him up to die at the hands - no, teeth of thos zombies.
I will warn you that the story does not move in a chronological timeline. At first, this may seem like a turn-off, but when you think about it, we never think back on past memories in a chronological way. We jump to from one memory to the next depending on the trigger. Using this method, we find out more about our characters pasts, but in a way that they would be reflecting back on things when the zombie poop hits the fan.
You may also find yourself wondering..."well?! what happened to THAT chracter?" Again you have to remember that when we cross paths with people, we don't always know where they are coming from, or what happens to them - we really only know someone for those moments that we share.
I think this book is a great stand-alone novel, but I wouldn't refuse a sequel. I also think it would make an excellent movie, but I doubt they could fit everything into just a couple of hours; there is a tremendous amount of action in this book.
