Meditations on space, art, war, death and religion merge with the homocrotic in John O'Reilly's intensely personal photo transformations. For this artist, montage has proved the richest medium for personal allegory, and the formal and symbolic evolution of O'Reilly's work corresponds to his own awakening self discovery. His working methods of cutting and pasting mirror the energy inherent in de-constructing and reconstructing the psyche. Alternately, the physical merging of iconic Others enables their psychic incorporation into the Self. Over twenty-five years of part-time employment as an art therapist have rendered O'Reilly equally interested in art and psychology, and willing to use his deepest obsessions, fetishes, and fears as source material for his tiny assemblies of magic. Seller's Description:
VG/VG, bump to lower front cover. Burgundy cloth boards, B/W illustrated DJ. 188 pp. Catalog of an exhibition held at the Addison Gallery of American Art, Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass., 3 Sept. -22 Dec. 2002. From the artist's website: Like all obsessive artists, photocollage practitioner John O'Reilly spends hours and days on end in his studio, fine-tuning his intricate, idiosyncratic cut-and-paste compositions. On those rare occasions when O'Reilly feels limited within the confines of his own studio, he visits those of fellow artists such as Picasso, Pissaro and Ingres, often making cameo appearances in their masterpieces. In daring feats of illusionary transformation, O'Reilly time-travels through centuries of art history and rummages around the studios and canvases of his idols, searching for clues to his own identity.
