It also looks at the difficulties so many cities find in the way of prosperity - most often external forces in the form of military invasion or bombardment, but also the devastating natural killers: fire, flood, plague, or earthquake.The seat of the Japanese government and imperial family, Tokyo was originally a small fishing village named Edo. In 1869, it was renamed Tokyo (Eastern Capital) and became the Japan's political and cultural center. It has recovered from two major catastrophes in the 20th century: the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 and the World War II firebombings in 1945. Today it is famous for many things - including restaurants: in 2007 the city was awarded 191 Michelin stars in total, nearly twice as many as its nearest competitor, Paris.
