Here is a classic book on travel. Nowadays, one simply cannot visit this place, as the US military has placed many big guns and shoot on sight anything that moves across these hills and valleys. I know, since I have seen the very same locations on videos. And the local culture described in this book has certainly suffered. However, don't be dissuaded from trying it out, as you will certainly come away enlightened.
Many copies available, from cheap paperbacks to vintage, signed hardbacks.

Wild Tale introduces Afghan Culture
If you are heading to Afghanistan or ever thought about it, this is a classic. It is an excellent summary of a couple of Brits amazing adventure to and through Afghanistan. If you have been to the Afghan lands all your memories will come rushing back as he describes with great humor his interaction with the Afghan people. I have been to the region he is traveling to by helicopter and horse in the last few years and it hasn?t changed a bit. This story is a must for US Diplomats and Military members heading to the region, you need to understand the culture and this story gives great examples of the bizarre (by western standards) situations you will encounter. Funny, different and easy to read.
