A silent crippler stalks millions of North Americans. It afflicts one person with tremors, makes another depressed or psychotic, and causes agonizing leg pains or paralysis in still another. It can mimic Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, early Parkinson's disease, diabetic neuropathy, or chronic fatigue syndrome. It can make men or women infertile or cause development disabilities in their children. The disorder is vitamin B12 deficiency. This isn't a new or fad disease. You'll find it listed in the textbooks of any first-year medical student. Yet it may be the most misdiagnosed disease and, when this occurs, the consequences can be tragic.

How many illnesses could be diagnosed that are actually from vitamin B-12 deficiency? According to these authors, those health problems are legion. Some unfortunate patients are misdiagnosed with illnesses as diverse as multiple sclerosis and cervical dysplasia but are actually B-12 deficient instead. Some telltale signs of the deficiency are: tinnitus numb/tingling/weak limbs, dizziness, tremors, impotence, incontinence, etc. Who is at particular risk of B-12 deficiency? The elderly, those with impaired digestion at any point, vegans, those who have had laughing gas, and patients with a whole slew of illnesses, including cancer, AIDS, GERD, diabetes, to name but a few.
Vitamin B-12 needs several steps to be absorbed, which makes it particularly vulnerable to mis-function along the way. The best natural sources are from lamb and beef liver, with chicken liver, sardines, and egg yolks coming in as fairly distant "also rans."
There is a whole chapter just for physicians!
