The thing about Alice Starmore is that she does it properly. You get the history, she sets the scene, the photography is beyond lovely so that by the time you come to the charted patterns, you are already totally sold on cables and are itching to pick up your needles. An explanation of the abbreviations appear on every page of the charts so there's no irritating flipping backwards and forwards and the pages are stacked full of helpful advice for every project. She always treats the Reader as a respected friend.
The actual patterns are a joy - no plain ribbed bands here - cables are the name of the game and from lower hem to the neck, the patterns flow with lovely smooth transitions from cuffs to arms to neck. Explanations are given as to why and how each element is part of the garment - in short, the Reader is involved at every stage of the journey.
This book is a treasure to me and I'm glad to own it.
