Distinctions of sex and age and vocation vanished away. The Western genius for technology had invented a weapon of destruction which took no account of terrain or of distance--the bombing plane, which could fly practically anywhere and drop its lethal cargo on any target that military science or the spirit of vengeance might suggest...Mass killing did in fact rob the cradle and the grave.
