The Hornblower Companion is an excellent addition to the eleven book series of the Hornblower saga. With the maps and explanations Forester's breathes life into classic early 19th century hero. The book helped me understand how Horatio evolved into the leader that he became as he moved forward in his life.
This book is a must have if you are a Hornblower fan.

At sea with CS Forester
This is a very useful book for anyone attempting to follow the exploits of Horatio Hornblower. In the first section, the atlas, Forester includes 30 maps, each with a page of commentary. In the larger part of the book, he traces how he conceived of the character and wrote the novels and narrative fragments treating Hornblower. One gets some insight into Forester's personality and some details of his life during the period that he was writing these novels. The details of his life, however, are woefully lacking in dates and in specifics about other people in his life. Highly recommended.
