John Gardner Wilkinson (1797-1875), an Englishman, was one of the leading international Egyptologists of his time. In these two authoritative volumes, he covers just about everything one would wish to know about the life and customs of the ancient Egyptians inter alia their class system, government structure, religion, army, working conditions, trades, private lives, houses and gardens, leisure activities and funeral rites. Both volumes also contain plenty of interesting and relevant woodcuts of diagrams and ornaments.
Although we now have access to far more material and literature on this period in Egyptian history, Gardner's work has an enduring appeal. It is a masterly introduction to a fascinating and advanced civilisation.
