An enjoyable read. Fletcher clears up some murky matters, corrects popular notions, and his "Consider the fact that this source is official, but it's all we have" caveats steer the reader through a long, fascinating era.

Early Europe
Fletcher aims this brief survey of a seminal period in European history at a broad audience. He manages this beautifully. I particularly valued the fact that the book nonetheless periodically grounds itself by focussing in on a contemporary source. I also liked his approach to theoretical issues which was stimulating without showing any obvious signs of latter-day romanticism.
