As is common with many book series, this sequel to the first book, Rendezvous with Rama, is not a gripping as the first. While not disappointed with the book and its writing, it did not hold my interest in the same way as the first. In reading the preface, you get more of the history behind the writer, Gentry Lee, brought in to 'co-write' the sequels with Arthur C. Clarke - perhaps therein lies the reason for the diminshed enjoyment.

Great read
A fascinating and enjoyable sequel to Rama, this book covers the second visit. Still lots of interesting revelations about this second ship, but this book focuses more on human reactions and interactions (greed, betrayal, etc).
Also of interest, in describing a world-wide economic melt-down following the first visit, there was an uncomfortable fore-shadowing of our current economic mess.

Rama II
At the dawn of the twenty-third century, another Rama ship is discovered hurtling toward Earth. A crew is assembled to rendezvous with the massive vessel. Armed with everything known about Raman technology and culture (which is very little) they prepare to encounter the 'Rama II' secrets.
The second of the Rama series leads the reader into startling, sensational -- and perhaps even deadly revelations about the landscape, creatures and automated caretakers of the great vessel. The pace of the story is very much the same as the first book 'Rendezvous With Rama', but with interesting revelations about the ship and the 'Ramans' themselves.
Clarke and Lee write well together, and bring together ideas of human space travel with an image of 'others' from the cosmos into a believable and well structured story.

new discoveries, what could be next?
This is the second in the series of Rama books, and it continues to develop the slowly forming plot. New and intriguing things continue to become part of the strange science fiction of Rama's landscape. The sense of wonder is only a little bit tinged by the explorer's hardly allowable fear of what new dangerous possibilities could be discovered next.
Nothing too dramatic, but well written if a bit slow plot wise.
