'Wishful Drinking is a touching and incisive account of bipolarity, addiction and motherhood.' Independent 'No motive is pure. No one is good or bad - but a hearty mix of both. And sometimes life actually gives to you by taking away.' Carrie Fisher in Wishful Drinking In Wishful Drinking, Carrie Fisher told the true and intoxicating story of her life with inimitable wit. Born to celebrity parents, she was picked to play aprincess in a little movie calledStar Wars when only 19 years old. "But it isn't all sweetness and light sabres." Alas, aside from a demanding career and her role as a single mother (not to mention the hyperspace hairdo), Carrie also spends her free time battling addiction and weathering the wild ride of manic depression. It's an incredible tale: from having Elizabeth Tayloras a stepmother, to marrying (and divorcing) Paul Simon, and from having the father of her daughter leave her for a man, to ultimately waking up one morning and finding a friend dead beside her in bed. Carrie Fisher's star-studded career included roles in numerous films such as The Blues Brothers and When Harry Met Sally. She was the author of four bestselling novels, Surrender in the Pink, Delusions of Grandma, The Best Awful and Postcards from the Edge, which was made into a hit film starring Shirley MacLaine and Meryl Streep. Carrie's experience with addiction and mental illness - and her willingness to talk honestly about them - made her a sought-after speaker and respected advocate. She was truly one of the most magical people to walk among us.

Very truthful and honest writing about her mental illness. It is evident that her inner strength, her sense of humor, her daughter and her mom, Debbie Reynolds , all have helped her on the road to recovery.

Funny Story
Carrie Fisher is very funny. Maybe not for everyone, but she made me laugh.

Absolutely Hilarious
I really wish this book was longer! I love her sense of humor, and laughed out loud so many times. While she does ramble, and gets a little off topic, it's like the reader is on a roller coaster with her.

A hard life borne with humour.
This book, written by an obviously intelligent and humorous writer, is disappointing because of its flippancy. Carrie Fisher, child of Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, has such an interesting story to tell, but there's the sense that if it was told in a down-to-earth and earnest way, the reader might disappear. The bizarre incident of a beloved, gay, male friend dying beside her during the night, is never really told. We don't know what she thought, how she reacted, how she got through the police interview that would have been mandatory, or the Coroner's findings.
And only the merest gleanings of incidents in her childhood are dwelt upon. Debbie Reynolds' clothes closet gets a bit more space, as does Carrie's bipolar condition, but the 'meat' of her story is sadly missing. Which is a pity, because her wit is sparkling. Yet the whole book reads like a script of memorable 'one-liners', and can be read in a day.
The photos of Debbie and Eddie in the '50's are fascinating, as is the glimpse we get of Harry Karl, step-father. But although it's evident this author has it in her to write a 'gutsy', sincere and engrossing book, this is not it. Maybe next time.

fantstic read, honest, and laugh out loud funny
This is my first Carrie Fisher book and what a great book !!! She shares her life from childhood to the present with remarkable courage. The most rewarding to the reader is her wonderful sense of humor which is sprinkled throughout. If you enjoy laughing out loud, then I suggest this book.
