Worldly and ambitious, Isabella d'Este is a legendary beauty and when she weds the Marquis of Mantua, all her dreams seem to come true. Superior in looks and intellect to her sister, the spirited but naive Beatrice, Isabella believes she is destined to rule the courts of Italy. But her triumph is short-lived. When Beatrice is betrothed to Ludovico, the Duke of Milan, Isabella finds herself drawn to her sister's husband, a man as dangerous as he is charismatic. Locked in a fierce rivalry, the sisters fight for Ludovico's affections and for the larger prize, to be immortalized by his court painter, Leonardo da Vinci. Meanwhile Da Vinci fights a battle of his own, to escape the incessant pressure of his noble patrons. But in a treacherous political climate, immortality through art becomes a luxury, and the two sisters must choose between loyalty and survival.

Loved this book - insight into the lives of royalty and Leonardo Davinci. I enjoyed reading about the challenges, political machinations and power struggles of two powerful families. It was interesting to me to read how these two sisters who by our standards are still children, had to deal with deception, deceit, unfaithfulness and family and manage to stay alive. You had to be one step ahead of your friends and enemies. Great read.

Italy in the 15th century
Almost larger than life tale of two sisters who compete in all things. The d"Este sisters were the celebrities of their time and they were interesting characters. Karen Essex is an author who has done her research and brings these people to life in her engaging novel. Leonardo Da Vinci figures in the novel as well and there were a lot of interesting facts that were revealed about him.. You will be transported to the world of Beatrice and Isabella and immersed in Italian history in a thoroughly enjoyable way.

Italian Renaissance
Brilliant! Essex's novel tells the complex, haunting story of the d'Este sisters of Italy during the Renaissance. Leonardo da Vinci cameos in this tale, but the central action is around the relationship between the sisters and the men in their lives. This was a troubled time for Italy and Karen Essex brings the period vividly alive with vibrant descriptions and a mesmerizing story. If you enjoy historical fiction don't miss this one.
