A Powerful Read.....
The Cats in Krasinski Square by Karen Hesse tells a story of ingenuity, bravery, hope, and triumph in a time in history filled with wickedness, darkness, desperation, and despair?the Holocaust. Utilizing a clear and simple style, Hesse invokes powerful imagery in telling the story of a little Jewish girl in Poland and many orphan cats outside the ghetto walls. Beautiful illustrations done by Wendy Watson eloquently depict the events of the story and the emotions of the characters. Light dances over each illustration, symbolic of the message of hope that the story conveys.
The story is sensitive to the audience of young readers. The essence of the Holocaust is well represented without the gory details that would be too intense for fragile young minds.
This book is a powerful, engaging read for elementary grades, kindergarten and up.
