As a huge fan of horror fiction AND Stephen King, Skeleton Crew was his second collection of short stories that I read after Night Shift. It was also an excellent book that I loved just as much! The majority of his fans would automatically mention the first story, The Mist, as their favorite, but while I always immensely enjoy reading the novella, there are numerous stories in this collection that I would call just as good or better. The Monkey has always been one of my favorites, a terrifying story of a man who moves his family into a new house and finds a toy from his childhood, a toy monkey that brought a lot of horror and death into his young life. Cain Rose Up is one of the shortest stories in the book, but it is also one of the scariest. It is about a college student who rapidly goes crazy, becoming more and more unpredictably dangerous. What he decides to do about it will horrify you. Uncle Ottos Truck is the spooky tale of a man who is haunted by the broken down truck that belonged to his deceased uncle. Gramma is a chilling story of a little boy who discovers a frighteningly good reason to be afraid of his bed-ridden grandma. Finally, The Reach is about an old woman who suddenly finds that she can see the ghost of her dead husband and others, ghosts who are summoning her to The Reach, the body of water that separates the small town of Little Tall Island from the mainland. Any fan of Stephen King who enjoys his short stories will enjoy this book, but it is a particularly perfect choice for horror fans!
