Both painters, they live a life of bohemian languor in Copenhagen until one day their lives are irreversibly altered. The Danish Girl eloquently shows the intimacy that defines a marriage and the nearly forgotten story of the love between a man who discovers that he is, in fact, a woman, and his wife who would sacrifice anything for him.Set against the glitz and decadence of 1920s Copenhagen, Paris and Dresden, and inspired by a true story, The Danish Girl is about one of the most passionate and unusual marriages of the twentieth century.'a story of true love, suffering and sacrifice' - Sunday Telegraph

As this unusual love story unfolded I was drawn to the character development of both Greta an Einar, and especially Greta's emotional strength versus Einar's frailty. She deeply loved her husband Einar, and as difficult as it was to lose her partner in marriage, she understood and helped support his need to transition to Lili. Both Greta and Einar made life altering decisions and sacrifices that impacted their partner. Although I was hoping for a "happily ever after" ending, it was left up to the reader's imagination on how the story actually concluded, because it wasn't spelled out. In my opinion it is more of a "chick book" and could make for an interesting book club discussion about the sanctity of marriage and also the public controversy regarding these operations in our current time.
