Brooklyn to Baghdad is a remarkable book. It read like a conversation between friends even as it provided a candid, almost horrifying description of American lives compromised by politics and egos again and again while fighting terrorists in Iraq. The book started with the author's time as a NYC police detective. He proudly described the job, the achievements and the camaraderie with a humility that was refreshing. I got a clear picture of his dedication, that being a NYC cop meant being part of something big, important and unified, like a brotherhood. I couldn't wait to read more, to find out how his loyalty to America helped him take down more "bad guys" over in Iraq.
Slowly, I began to realize the story was changing. He wasn't part of a tightly knit organization that protected its own. He'd joined a battlefield where "boots on the ground" and technical expertise weren't valued nearly as much as political agendas. I kept reading, hoping he could turn the tide. But instead, I grew more and more incredulous that he maintained his sanity and humanity in the midst of a royally screwed up situation. Especially since he never gave up hope, he never stopped trying to do his best and always gave his all. It was our government's priorities that failed him, not the other way around. I loved this book and hope you will too.
