This is a terrific, fast-paced, pulse-pounding crime thriller.
Nina Borg is a Red Cross nurse in Copenhagen. She is also part of network that help illegal immigrant women and their children. She's thought of as a do-gooder. It's difficult for her to refuse to help.
When her estranged friend, Karin, plops down a key in front of Nina and says she's not doing this anymore, Nina has no clue what she's talking about.
Karin takes off.
The key is to a locker at the Copenhagen train station. Inside the locker is a suitcase. Inside the suitcase is a young boy. The boy is naked and unconscious...but alive.
Three-year-old Mikas Ramoska has been abducted from a playground in Vilnius, Lithuania. His mother, Sigita, is beside herself after waking-up from being drugged to find her son has been missing for 24 hours.
Meanwhile back in Denmark, Nina puts the boy in her car and walks back into the train station. Possibly to look for help. There she sees a dangerous-looking man kicking the locker and yelling something about "the money".
The man fastens his eyes on her and somehow seems to know she's involved.
She takes off running.
Now Nina is one the run with the boy.
She has no idea what's going on, but she knows it's not good.
Who is the boy? Who is the brute back at the station? Why are they obviously now in danger?
Should she turn the boy over to authorities where he might end up back in the arms of the people who took him?
When Nina finds Karin brutally murdered, her and the boy barely escape the man chasing them.
The stakes ratchet-up even more.
What follows is a harrowing, action-packed tale of the lengths Nina will go to protect Mikas and the fierce steps Sigita will take to find her son.
This is one electrifying read! Highly recommend.

Ho Hum Thriller
I read this for book club where it got mixed reactions. Some really liked it; others, including me, didn't. I found it difficult to keep track of characters and locales and abandoned reading about half way through.
