This isn't a "beach book" and I had to concentrate and take notes to keep the characters straight. (I think that happens when you get older.). Seeing the movie first gave me a preview of what was going to happen but that didn't bother me. Since I was in college during the Viet Nam years the story brought back a lot of memories about the social upheaval the war caused at home.

Revisiting history from a new perspective
It's hard to imagine that the world has changed so much and yet so little. I loved this book for helping me understand the past that I lived through. If you did not come of age in the 1960's or 70's, this story, based on truth, is an education in some of the turmoil facing a generation of youth--the smashing of ideals, the growth of the surveillance state and the rage and confusion we all felt. Even though my editor-self saw ways to tighten up the writing and avoid some of the repetition, I looked forward to reading it every night. It's a love and adventure tale set against a time of social and political upheaval.
