Michael Rose has written an excellent summary of the war George Washington and his army fought as insurgents for American independence. Despite his earlier career as a general in the British army, Rose shows no bias and gives an honest appraisal as a military historian. This feature alone makes the book worth reading, but it is particularly interesting at this time in the way Rose relates Washington's tactics as an insurgent force to the conflict in Iraq. His points are sobering and should dissuade anyone from unjustified optimism about any foreign force defeating less well-equipped but determined militias resisting occupying forces.
