This second installment into the Magic Circle quartet is a lovely addition to the story of four young outcasts. Tenets of faith in one's self, loyalty, and courage are all firmly in place in this story for young readers. Since the first book of the series, Pierce has developed the characters into deeper and more realistic portraits of young people just beginning to trust their new home. The plot and action don't seem contrived, but spring naturally and logically from events in the first book. This above all is what I appreciated about the book.
