With the 1927 opening of the Holland Tunnell beneath the Hudson River. flood of cars and trucks leaving Manhattan were dumped into the narrow streets of Jersey City on their way to points west. The answer to the problem was to create America's first superhighway, a $40 million project. It was backed by Frank Hague, one of the most powerful political bosses of his day and by 1930, all but the last three miles of it had been built (the section now known as the Pulaski Skyway). A vicious labor war ensued, pitting Hague against a former ally, union boss Teddy Brandle, and led to a sensational murder trial. When the Skyway opened in 1932, its design proved so flawed that newspapers called it "Death Avenue"
