This mystery begins as an adventure of a photographer from Arizona. The bear biologist, Tank, is along reluctantly and hates the grandstanding of the wildlife activist. His romance with Haley begins, but of course, the conflict is that they are literally from different worlds that they both love. As in many of Colleen Coble's stories, this one has, at some point, a lost child, a rescue dog, and an old, abandoned mine. An interesting side note is that Haley is an amputee and must work around that in the rugged Alaskan wilderness. Add a predatory bear, a half-sister, and an unsolved murder mystery and you have a pretty good mix.
