Seller's Description:
AS NEW. JACKET: VERY GOOD DJ. 10X11. Shrinkwrapped; First Printing, 2012; brown cloth hardcover in very good condition with gold gilt title to front cover and spine; profusely illustrated bw photographs, biographical references; dust jacket is in very good condition It was the great disaster of the 1930s, a horrific experience for all those aboard the ill-fated linerĀ Morro Castle. Sailing to New York from exotic, anything-goes Cuba, the luxurious cruise ship was filled with passengers finding an escape from the Great Depression. But, the night before arriving home, the ship became a scene of panic as a raging fire quickly spread, killing 137 and sending many overboard. In Inferno at Sea--a large-format hardcover, filled with never-before-seen photographs--we finally hear those personal accounts. Survivors tell their stories, family and friends share narratives of those lost that night, rescuers and volunteers all contribute to give us a rare glimpse into the events of September 8, 1934. The fading, maritime mystery of the Morro CastleĀ fire remains, but those closest to the disaster speculate about what really happened, and we gain a new perspective on a famous and tragic New Jersey shipwreck. _PAB_

Seller's Description:
Fine in fine jacket. Oblong oversized hardcover. Fine, fresh copy in equally fine dust jacket. SIGNED BY COYLE ON THE FRONT FREE ENDPAPER AND INSCRIBED AND SIGNED by Whitcraft on the half title page. Illustrated endpapers. 149 p. with list of passengers and crew, chronology. Profusely illustrated with vintage photographic images. Heavily illustrated recounting of one of America's great maritime disasters, the September, 1934 wreck and burning of the cruise ship Morrow Castle off Asbury Park, New Jersey. The ship was returning from a cruise to Cuba and was in its final day at sea before its scheduled arrival in New York when its captain suddenly died of an apparent heart attack and a fire broke out on board at 2: 50 AM. The fire spread quickly ( knocking out power and the ship's radio so only one SOS was sent); in the ensuing panic just six of the ship's twelve lifeboats were launched. In all 137 persons lost their lives. This fascinating volume presents the most varied collection of photographic images of the disaster and also provides the personal stoies of some of the people who were on the ship.
