Gerda Lerner had to push her way into Columbia University to pursue degrees in history. She became an a major scholar in the new field of women's studies in the late 20th century. This is her personal story, a dramatic one. Writing what she calls a "partial autobiography," Lerner begins in 1920s Vienna in a comfortable Jewish home. Imprisoned by the Nazis, then escaped to the U.S.in 1939. Taking her life up to 1958, she writes of searching for work, finding her place as an historian. At her death in January 2013, she was an emeritus professor, whose ideas have influenced generations of students at the University of Wisconsin.
