Seller's Description:
Very good. 309 Pages. Wraps. Bibliography. Notes. Index. Inscribed by the author. Joseph Wheelan was a reporter and editor for The Associated Press for 24 years in Cheyenne, Wyo.; Denver; Little Rock; and Raleigh, N.C. While news editor in the AP's Denver and Raleigh bureaus, Wheelan directed team, feature and investigative reporting projects while supervising daily news coverage. He also reviewed books for the AP and, among other things, wrote about the Korean War and the continuing battle by its veterans to obtain government benefits for cold-weather injuries. Before joining the AP, he was a reporter and state editor for the Casper (Wyo. ) Star-Tribune. Wheelan is a graduate of the University of Wyoming and the University of Colorado-Denver. When John Quincy Adams left the White House in 1829 after a disappointing single term, the 62-year-old former senator, secretary of state and diplomat appeared to be bound for a quiet retirement among his books and plants. But then his Massachusetts neighbors elected him to the House of Representatives, and for the next 17 years, Adams led the attack on slavery in Congress. John Quincy Adams was elected to the House of Representatives, and embarked on a surprising and spectacular late-life career. He became Congress' most acerbic and influential critic of slavery as well as a tireless proponent for human freedoms and First Amendment rights. From his fierce defense of the right to petition against Congress's "Gag Rule" suppressing all discussion of slavery, to his advocacy for the Africans of the Armistad, Adams gave voice to the voiceless. His championing of the abolitionist cause transformed him, the public's perception of him, and his legacy. When he died at the age of 80 in the U.S. Capitol, Adams was revered as the last iconic link to the Revolutionary Age.
