A little slow in the beginning but quickly becomes a riveting story of growing up female, in a very repressive culture. Nahid's personal story parallels the events in Iran as the shah lost power and the ayatollah took over.

A story I found very hard to put down. It's a frank and touching look at a woman's life, dreams, and family relations in pre and post-war Iran with an added dollop of American experiences and heartbreaks. Rachlin depicts Iranian culture and family members well through her writing. I fell in love with Maryam from the beginning (even though our cultures are so vastly different) and felt the pain of losing her daughter (Nahid). Through Nahid's story I am once again reminded how fortunate I am to have the rights I do as a woman living in America. Her story also highlights how women always seem to rely on each other to survive the hardships we may face--a fact that seems to transcends culture.
