If ever a series cried out for renewed circulation, it would be Lehrer's One-Eyed Mac. In the 1st, Mac is a teen dreaming of being a Kansas State trooper, like his dad. When a freak kick the can accident leaves him with only 1eye, those dreams are dashed. By the last book, he had been a pirate (one-eye...what else was he supposed to be?), a soldier, a holy roller, husband, father, lieutenant governor of Oklahoma and, finally, vice president of the United States. "Crown Oklahoma" is about his days as lieut governor. The title is an allusion to Governor Buffalo Bill's pet project--a dome for the capital. The governor always ended his speeches with the exhortation, "Crown Oklahoma!" How proud he would be if he could see our capitol. It has indeed be 'crowned,'--and financed without having to sell billboard space on it.
