When he was a child, Kirth Gersen's home was destroyed by an alliance of five criminal masterminds; except for Kirth and his uncle, the entire population of Mount Pleasant was either killed or enslaved. Kirth dedicated his life to revenge, and his uncle trained him for it. This book follows Kirth, in a series of five volumes (one per mastermind), as he tracks down and kills the Demon Princes (as the criminal masterminds style themselves) one by one.
As might be expected from the summary, The Demon Princes is very much a work of formula writing; the five volumes all have similarly structured plots that use similar plot devices. Despite that strike against the series, Vance does manage to include enough variation in the details to maintain interest. Besides, this is the sort of high quality writing that might be expected of Vance, and fans will not be disappointed.
