There are a few things in books about Black history that I will not tolerate and one of these things is giving watered down historical fictions books to children. When I was younger, I loved the Addy books, but as I became more knowledegeable, I discovered errors, such as the largest error that the Emancipation Proclamation freed all enslaved Blacks. This was not true. Only Blacks in certain areas were freed. The author got many facts correct, but the ones she got incorrect is very embarrassing. I understand that most books will lessen the horrors of a certain time period or ignorant concept because of the reader's age. However, something as important as heritage SHOULD NOT be watered down. It is better for children to know than to live in ignorance like I did for so many years. To be cautious, I wouldn't recommend this book unless you have done thorough research and use it as a comparison and contrast.
