Selina's review is erroneous. I don't think she actually read the book. Blubber is not about a group of kids who
befriends an overweight girl they think is mean. It's the exact opposite.
Linda Fisher is an overweight girl who makes the mistake of doing her class report on whales. As a result, Wendy, the most popular girl in class, and pals begin to ruthlessly torment Linda by calling her Blubber and subjecting her to various forms of humiliation.
It's told from the POV of another classmate who reluctantly is pulled along the trajectory of the teasing partly due to peer pressure and partly due to fear of becoming the next victim.
This is a raw and honest look at bullying and peer pressure which is just as relevant today as it was 35 years ago.

A great Lesson
In this day and age of obesity in children its nice to see a story dealing with such sensitive material. First impressions are not always right. The girls in the grade school class realize this when they befriend an over weight girl who they beleived at first to be mean. This sweet coming of age story is great for girls. It teaches ablout tolerence and inner beauty.
