This short book (which mirrors the stage play of the same name by the authors) is an excellent example of the classic styles of Dickens and Collins: mistaken identities, lost fortunes, mysterious women, suspense and the ultimate triumph of good over evil...they're all here! In short, the book traces the fates of two orphan boys who are accidentally given the same name before they are adopted and, therefore, have their futures and fortunes forever entwined. One goes missing while the other becomes the recipient of the love of a good mother as well as her legacy at death. When he learns that he was wrongfully given this fortune, he strives to return it to its proper owner (the second of the two boys.) Before he can, though, he dies, leaving behind a business partner and lawyer to carry out his mission. In their attempt to do so, they encounter a beautiful young woman under the evil hand of a guardian and a treacherous forger who will do everything in his power to stop them from revealing his identity and his crime. From the busy streets of London to the dangerous slopes of the Alps, their adventure carries them through danger and death until it ends in an unexpected and surprising way, thanks to the love of a good woman and a devoted, if pessimistic, servant! Although the book is by no means the best example of the authors' works, it was a fun read and I enjoyed it.
