Spinoza puts forward a small number of definitions and axioms from which he attempts to derive hundreds of propositions and corollaries, such as "When the Mind imagines its own lack of power, it is saddened by it", "A free man thinks of nothing less than of death", and "The human Mind cannot be absolutely destroyed with the Body, but something of it remains which is eternal." The Euclidean style is larded with stretches of informal and at times pugnacious prose.

This book came to me highly recommended, but I was disappointed. Part of my objection the author couldn't help: knowledge has advanced significantly since he wrote, and some of his statements are now known to be false. Ethics is worth reading as a classic of its time and genre, but be warned: the text is dense and complex--this is not a book to skim. It would be difficult to use it as a guide to living one's life, in my opinion.
